My former teammate Atim Otii from San Diego State is doing something really cool--she is in Uganda preparing for a humanitarian basketball camp in Gulu that she has organized. I would LOVE to be in a position to go to Uganda someday and help , but since I can't right now with my family responsibilities I spearheaded an effort to get some basketball jerseys donated from kids in Idaho Falls. Most of the jerseys came from the Skyline basketball camp with the exception of quite a few that came from a teacher who lives in Shelley. I am finally getting the jerseys RUSH delivered to Denver so they can make it on the June 26th flight with Atim's group that is headed to Uganda from the United States. Anyway, as I was organizing the jerseys tonight I was excited to find out that we have at least twelve sets of 7 or more MATCHING jerseys that are in really good shape, so I think Atim will be able to make good use of them. It was also a very strange coincidence that as I was organizing the jerseys Ty turned on a TLC documentary about a young boy from Uganda who had some life-saving surgery in the United States.
Here is a press release that I posted on my company blog about the jerseys that were donated:
The 2008 Skyline basketball camp attendees came through big for NAI Commerce One broker Kaly Shippen this week, donating 150 basketball jerseys that will be given to kids in a war-torn region of Uganda this summer in conjunction with humanitarian basketball camps being organized by Kaly's former San Diego State basketball teammate Atim Otii.
"It was encouraging to see what an enthusiastic response we got from the Skyline kids. They are so willing to help out when given the opportunity", Kaly said.
Skyline's star center Robert Edwards even donated a collector's item #23 Michael Jordan jersey that will be a treasured prize for any kid.
